What I loved about zac posen: the combination of jersey knits and color for spring, izzac mizrahi dazzled me with the neutral tones, and nudes of his silhouettes. The trend of neutral tones and nudes keeps popping up for spring, along inspiration of different countries alexander wang and a memorable "ride me" by betsey johnson.

As summer comes to a definate end in the city... I begin to search for the hottest boots.

It’s Fashion: Surveying New York’s SS11 Week of Style

The most exciting New York Fashion Week in years has just come to a close. There's only one word to describe the shows, the parties, and the electricity in the air: Beyond. From the migration of the tents uptown, from Bryant park to Lincoln Center, to the hype (and success) of Fashion's Night Out 2.0, to the instantly covetable collections and larger-than-life parties, it seems that everyone went above and beyond to prove just why New York City is the fashion capital of the world. Here, a round up of the standout collections, the coolest new designers, and the best after (after) parties.

THE SHOWS
God was in the details for Spring/Summer 2011, where accents transcended the color palettes, cuts, and typical resources we’ve seen in past seasons. Instead of technicolor stories, designers went neutral, opting for vivid splashes of color at just the right moment. Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai of Vena Cava mastered this color-blocking trend. “We liked the idea that there could be all these varying tones in a whole palette of neutrals,” said Mayock. “So instead of really bright colors, our collection was restrained to just a few bold ones, with a rainbow of neutrals as the backdrop.” ADAM by Adam Lippes also used color strategically, juxtaposing a soft color palette and whimsical chiffon numbers with bursts of bright red—the hue of the moment.

Sheer cutouts were another trend on runways, exemplified by Victoria Bartlett’s VPLline. “I was inspired by suspension, things hanging and pulling away from the body—the gravitational pull,” Bartlett told BlackBook. “I liked the thought of dresses dispersing with skin being exposed under sheer fabric.” Another example came from Yara Flinn ofNomia, who put her sculpting background to work by constructing perfect party dresses with skin-baring flare that’s clever rather than crass.

Several wallet- and eco-friendly creations were on display, such as Christian Siriano‘s footwear collaboration with Payless (yes, Payless). But there was no discount when it came to the actual designs, as Siriano’s set of architectural heels, rumored to hit stores next February, were fashion-forward and chic. To create her green collection, Behnaz Sarafpour worked with organic and recycled materials, like organic cotton, jewelry made from organic straw, and shoes hand-carved from wood from fallen trees. “I used mostly natural fibers, but did it in such a way that the organic worked within the non-organic to create a more polished look,” noted Sarafpour.

This season was also about looking beyond convention. It was about innovation and re-creation, taking the known and turning it into the unknown, without sacrificing wearability (some looks more daring than others). And no one showcased this better than cult-favorite (and BlackBook’s It Girl for October) Katie Gallagher, whose futuristic sportswear collection worked a sleek silhouette with sharp, asymmetrical details. The show was styled by Elle’s Kate Lanphear, who praised the designer: “I love everything Katie does.” Kimberly Ovitz also played with symmetry, layering short dresses with lengthy draping to create an unexpected, irreverent silhouette.

Moving from symmetry to biology, two designers were inspired specifically by sea creatures, but in two very different ways. Mandy Coon’s collection was filled with tendril-like draping and vivid prints, as she “reconnected with a childhood fascination with jellyfish...basking on the majestic beaches of Tulum,” according to her show’s program. Tentacle-like footwear by LD Tuttle completed the motif. Emerging avant-garde designerAsher Levine presented a range of transformative menswear, complete with aquatic tassles and fin-like draping. One exceptional piece was Levine’s extra-long silk robe, which gave a whole new meaning to the season’s floor-length trend.

THE PARTIES
Some of the rowdiest Fashion Week parties were held outdoors. From various impromptu Fashion’s Night Out block parties to an open-air carnival, partygoers were encouraged to take their antics to the streets, which, when combined with ample open bars, resulted in a recipe for debauchery—the good kind. For FNO, the Meatpacking District was the place to be: booze, food trucks, and double-decker-bus dancing kept the blocks bustling for hours. The Helmut Lang x Cobrasnake and Diane von Furstenburg parties were highlights of the night, with appearances by Ms. FNO herself, Anna Wintour, and a vivacious DVF dancing and taking pictures with fans.

Then there was Alexander Wang’s rave-tastic afterparty, held in a parking lot near Milk Studios. Besides a carousel, bumper cars, and three Belve-sponsored open bars, there was a massive stage flooded with hot people gettin’ low to Rye Rye performing live and a DJ spinning everything from Lady Gaga to Outkast. After all the stress that comes with preparing for Fashion Week, there’s no better way to cap it all off than watching all your favorite models, designers, and celebrities get beyond tanked. There were also a spate of exciting new venues that opened during the week. Look forward to partying all winter at The Darby, Lavo, Don Hill’s, Bill’s Bunker, Tacombi, and the newly reopened Boom Boom Room (or whatever it’s really called). This season was definitely a rager.

NYC tornado suprise, thursday night September 16, 2010

National Weather Service investigators may still be assessing the fallout, but Brooklyn residents are already pretty sure that what they experienced yesterday was a "fucking tornado, holy shit." Whatever you want to call it, the freak storm was so awesome, powerful, and often terrifying — we know what you're going to say Kansas, so just don't, okay, because this isn't Kansas, it's Brooklyn, this doesn't happen here — that, of course, everyone grabbed their cameras and documented it for posterity. Sometimes on a roof or hanging out of a window. Sometimes while shouting "dude!" a lot. Here are our favorite videos from the Great Brooklyn Tornado-type Thing of 2010.
