Grunge of the 90's is Back
On the heels of the recent surge of 1980s-inspired fashion, designers and consumers now look toward the 90s grunge era for inspiration. This latest incarnation of the anti-consumerist anti-fashion trend is uncannily appropriate for 2010, similarly emerging from a strained economy. While the original grunge movement blended elements of punk, feminism and metal — leading to the birth of "riot grrl" and "kinderwhore" music and fashion — today's version is more brand-savvy and image-based, rather than an ideological statement. In a departure from demurely feminine or body-conscious looks, Juniors are flocking to updated grunge staples like flannel shirts, Doc Marten's boots, distressed denim and studded accessories. Reality may not bite quite as sharply in 2010, but demand for laid-back comfort and a sense of rock 'n' roll individuality has definitely returned (Style Sight.Com).
